Review the leadership behaviours and approaches that are common in an organisation with which you are familiar. Identify how the role and nature of the organisation (ideally financial services / banking), its corporate governance and its operating context and external environment shapes these.
Critically compare alternative leadership theories to assess their validity, and their utility in helping to analyse and explain the behaviour of leaders in the organisation. In particular, you should consider how these theoretical perspectives are relevant to the ethics, values, knowledge, skills, behaviours and other characteristics expected of effective leaders in the organisation.

Decide which theories, concepts and models are relevant to the assignment and to your organisational context.
Think about leadership at all levels of the organisation – senior / strategic leaders, to middle / tactical leaders.
Link in with approaches that are accepted in terms of corporate governance, what the organisation is trying to achieve: mission statement, strategic objectives, communications
Consider how to link criticisms of theories, concepts and models to your organisation e.g. top down or bottom up
What behaviours do these leaders show and how do they relate to the theoretical models?
Consider which sources of evidence you will use (change management situations, etc)

‘Critically compare’ requires critical analysis to be provided and evidence to explore theories, rather than purely describing – apply theory to practice, and explain practice through theory.

This part of the question implies exploration of ethics in leadership (Corporate governance, CSR policy, code of conduct, etc) What does the organisation have in terms of these documents.
Exploration should cover:
- Accepted values and behaviours are affected by organisational and national cultures.
- What theories / concepts relate to ethics and leadership? (links back with authentic leadership / ethical leadership).
- Why do leaders choose to behave ethically (or not)? For instance is it that they believe in it, or is it to attract customers?
- Leadership Effectiveness:
- Are these leaders seen as effective?
- Is effectiveness determined by: who they are, what they do, how they behave, how they lead in different situations, how they lead to achieve organisational objectives… Link with leadership theories or models to be covered in the essay
- Traits, Skills, Behavioural, Situational Contingency Thesis, What leaders achieve (Path-goal theory, Leader-member exchange, Transformational Leadership, etc.)
