Data report

Individual assignment (45% of final grade)

Number of words: 2,000-word written report with appropriate analyses (not including title page, references or appendices)

__________________________________________________________________________

OBJECTIVE: To prepare a data report appropriate for secondary school teachers based on The National Survey of Australian Secondary Students and Sexual Health 2013 (NSASSH).

___________________________________________________________________________

This assignment will help you achieve the following learning outcomes for this subject:

  • Upon successful completion of this subject, you should be able to:
  • Interpret key aspects of research findings
  • Prepare and present a report that includes statistical analysis and involves the presentation of data
  • Work effectively in teams to produce a report.

___________________________________________________________________________

As individuals you will:

  • Use the research questions to design your plans for the quantitative data analyses.
  • Describe the original study design, method, sampling strategy and population, data collection method, data variables used and the study participants (including sample size) using relevant data from the NSASSH
  • Describe data in both narrative and graphical formats.
  • Describe the methods that you use in your analyses
  • Conduct analyses to address your research objectives
  • Interpret your results and draw appropriate conclusions
  • Prepare a narrative summary of your findings
  • Formulate suitable recommendations for the secondary school

In regards to these tasks, students will:

  • Describe and analyse data from Table 2 (NSASSH)
  • Conduct analyses to address the research objectives that include either a t-test or χ2 to test relevant associations
  • Conduct a content analysis of the focus group transcript provided to complement the findings from your quantitative analyses
  • Include both quantitative and qualitative findings in your narrative summaries and interpretation of results
  • Attach your detailed qualitative analysis as an appendix.

Each student must submit a written report that includes the following: title page and abstract; report with introduction, methods, results and discussion; appendix

All students will produce similar reports in terms of structure and format.

An abridged version of The National Survey of Australian Secondary Students and Sexual Health 2013 (NSASSH) is available in the Assessment 2 folder on the PHE2AHR LMS site. Students will need to access this report to complete the assessment and will need to use different chapters to complete their report satisfactorily.

SCENARIO

As a LTU student you are given a placement at a secondary school. Recent reports in the media have raised awareness of a study conducted by researchers at LTU on the sexual health of secondary students. Two issues raised in the report have received particular attention about behaviours among secondary school students: alcohol and drug use; and the use of technology and cyberbullying.

The media attention has led to an increase in the number of parents at the school raising concerns about these issues. In response, the school principal has approached the LTU placement students, who are studying Public Health, Rehab Counselling or Health Information Management, and asked them to prepare a response to the report that includes additional analysis of relevant data. This is needed so that teachers in the school are better informed about the research and can answer parents’ questions. The principal makes it clear that the expectation is for “evidence-based reports” as some of the parents “know a lot about this sort of thing and we need to be clear that we know what we are talking about”.

The school has also collected data from two sources:

  • A random sample of students in Years 10, 11 and 12
  • A focus group with Year 12 students.

Public Health, Rehab Counselling placement students were asked to prepare a report based on the NSASSH report and the focus group data to address the following three research questions.

  • How do drinking patterns, in terms of the number of drinks on a day that a student has an alcoholic drink vary for all students in Years 10, 11 and 12 and for male and female students in Years 10, 11 and 12?
  • Are any observed differences in drinking patterns for these groups statistically significant?
  • Considering the qualitative data available, what are possible explanations for drinking behaviours in Year 12 students?

REPORT STRUCTURE AND CONTENT

Title page and abstract (10%)

This section should include:

  • Title for the report, author’s name and affiliation (that is, Department of Public Health, La Trobe University).
  • Abstract (i.e., executive summary) of the work (max. 250 words), including the following information: Background; Methods; Results, and; Conclusion.
  • A maximum of eight keywords.

This section is NOT included in the word count.

Body of the report (75%)

There should be four main sections. Subheadings should be used.

  • Introduction (5%)

This section should present the real‐world problem and context, including appropriate references to other relevant research studies and/or systematic reviews, and identification of any gaps or issues.

There should be a clear statement of the research questions that the report addresses.

  • Method (15%)

This section should be comprised of three parts.

  • There should be a summary of the following information from the original report (NSASSH): study design, method, sampling strategy and population, data collection method, data variables used and the study participants (including sample size).
  • Description of the method you used to perform your quantitative analyses.
  • Description of the method you used to perform your qualitative analysis.
  • Results (35%)

This section should be comprised of two parts.

  • The first part should include the results of your quantitative analyses. (Note: data sources will be specific to your discipline [see attached]). There are two main aspects to this: a description of the data from your data source (Table 7.2 (NSASSH) or the HIM dataset) in both narrative and graphical formats; and the results of your quantitative analyses. The results of your analyses should be reported as a narrative summary and in terms of descriptive statistics and inferential statistics (in the form of chi-square, χ2, and/or t‐tests), which can be presented in a table format.
  • The second part of your results should describe the focus group sample and the themes that are identified in your analysis, using examples from the transcript to support each theme. At least three themes should be identified in your analysis.
  • Discussion (20%)

This section should discuss the results in reference to the research question or hypothesis and objectives. It should include an interpretation of the study results and their implications. This section should also include acknowledgement of the study limitations (including what they are) and suggestions for future directions or next steps.

Appendices (10%)

This section should include your coded transcript (that is, the coding and themes that you develop in your qualitative data analysis)

References

References are part of any academic and professional work and should comply with conventions for study identifiers and citations.
