(THIS SECTION IS NOT REQUIRED, but this is info you need to answer. YOU DO NOT NEED TO WRITE AN OPENING, AND YOU SHOULD NOT CUT AND PASTE THIS INFO INTO YOUR PAPER).  Organize the research for your paper around the research question(s)/hypotheses listed below in the appendices. Review the APA manual and find peer-reviewed, empirical research articles and the mutual fund websites for examples of how to report the results for your mutual fund. Also ANSWER within the paper:

The SRI/BRI mutual fund reviewed is … Discuss the practices employed in both types of screening process that the mutual fund has undertaken and compare the investment returns of the mutual fund to the correspondingly sized secular index funds. What are the 5-year  (January 1, 2011- December 31, 2015) rates of return after expenses of your SRI or BRI fund, and did it earn as much as or more than the correspondingly sized secular index funds (e.g., S&P 500 Index {Fidelity Spartan 500 Index Fund Class Inv (FUSEX? Collect, present, analyze, and critically evaluate the financial data as it relates to an SRI/BRI FUND you have not written about in any past course during your academic career.

Your goal is to answer the following three questions:

  1. Is the five-year rates of return, after expenses, from 2011 through 2015, after expenses, of screened SRI or BRI fund earn as much as or more than the correspondingly sized, unscreened, after expenses, FUSEX?
  2. Are the 5-year rates of return of the SRI or BRI funds within 1% of the total returns of all correspondingly sized secular index funds (FUSEX), which postulates that investors would be willing to take a loss of at least 1% to make it worthwhile to invest with their conscience?
  3. Does your fund have more than or less than 30 stocks within its portfolio, thus reflecting its level of diversification? How many stocks are invested in.
  4. How many different screens does your mutual fund include, and what are they? (This should be answered in the Social Screening Research section of your paper). Categorize each of the screens as to whether they represent an example of a positive or negative screen, and discuss the implications of the choice of screening method on fund performance.

Financial Screening Research

Review the practices employed in the mutual fund’s screening process and compare its investment returns to the benchmarks. Collect, present, analyze, and critically evaluate financial data as it relates to an SRI/BRI FUND that you have not written about in any past course during your academic career. Consult the fund company’s prospectus and its 10k. State the Fund’s Investment Objective(s), Minimum Initial Investment, Minimum Subsequent Investment, Fees, Commission/Sales Charge, Redemption Fee, Management Fees, 12 b-1 Fee, Expense Ratio, Years of Manager in Position and experience, and if the fund has a professional investment management team. Include the Portfolio Turnover Rate from January 1, 2011 to December 31, 2015, Investment Policies and Risks (e.g., market, business, financial, and currency risk), any Unusual Problems/Risks (e.g., legal, ethical, management), services provided by the fund, share classes and types, asset allocation by sector, the fund’s toll-free telephone number, and how you obtained a copy of the fund’s prospectus.

Social Screening Research

Review the practices employed in the mutual fund’s screening process and answer how many different screens does your mutual fund include, and what are they?  Categorize each of the screens as to whether they represent an example of a positive or negative screen, and discuss the implications of the choice of screening method on fund performance. What problem does your fund solve for? What is the purpose for your fund? How does your fund answer these issues?

Analysis & Results

[Data analyses – Report results with discussion (interpretation, speculation, etc.)]:

Give appropriate descriptive information.

Present the results in a logical fashion, answering the research questions/hypotheses as stated and appropriate to the type of data collected. Include performance over 5 years from January 1, 2011 to December 31, 2015, Return on Equity (ROE), and BETA. To do so, GO to http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=FUSEX, CHARTS Interactive, and Comparison tab. Enter your fund, go to custom date range symbol and punch in dates of January 1, 2011 to December 31, 2015, and add the DOW or Nasdaq depending on the size of your fund.

Identify any assumptions of statistical tests and address any violation of those assumptions.

Make decisions based on the results of the statistical analysis. For example, are the results statistically significant?  Include relevant test statistic and p values.

See the APA manual regarding how to present results in text, tables, and figures.

Present sufficient information so the reader can make an independent judgment regarding interpretation.

Evaluation of Findings

[This section is used to report briefly what your findings mean.  Interpret results in light of the theories (i.e. Modern Portfolio Theory versus Stakeholder Theory, etc).  Describe whether the results obtained were expected given the literature and provide potential explanations for unexpected or conflicting results. Take care to avoid drawing conclusions beyond what can be interpreted directly from the study results.]
