You are required to plan a hike for a Year 9 Geography class. You will need to research an appropriate location to take a group of students within Southeast Queensland. Topographical maps for Queensland are available at http://qtopo.dnrm.qld.gov.au/.

You can choose any location you want just as long it is in South East Queensland Australia only. Mount Tamborine could be a good location

Question 1.

1. You must propose a round trip hike that starts at a road and includes stops at 3 main features that are all at different heights. On your map show the journey you are planning, clearly labelling the starting point and features.

1. Calculate the ‘as the crow flies’ distance covered in your hike.

Question 2

Complete all calculations for average gradient and angle of incline for the ‘as the crow

flies’ path between:

1. The starting point and Stop 1

1. Stop 1 and Stop 2

1. Stop 2 and Stop 3

1. Stop 3 and the finishing point

1. Show a cross section for the ‘as the crow flies’ path between the two points from Q2 that are furthest away from one another.

1. Plan another route with the gentlest inclines possible for the entire hike, while still visiting the same features. On your map, clearly mark your new route and justify your decisions.

1. Estimate how long the planned walk from Question 3 c) would take if the average person moves at approximately 3.5 km/h when hiking. Identify the strengths and limitations of your working.

Question 4

If during this journey, an accident occurred at Stop 2 it would require the injured person to be airlifted out of the area by helicopter. Determine a suitable location away from Stop 2 for the Emergency Services helicopter to safely evacuate the person. Provide the compass bearing and distance from Stop 2 to this evacuation point. Justify your selected location by referring to its gradient and angle of incline.
