One of the definitions of a “principle” is that it is a basic belief, theory or rule that has a major influence on the way in which something is done. “Quality management principles” are a set

of fundamental beliefs, norms, rules and values that are accepted as true and can be used as a basis for quality management.

The QMP’s can be used as a foundation to guide an organization’s performance improvement. They were developed and updated by international experts of ISO/TC 176, which is responsible for developing and maintaining ISO’s quality management standards”.

This assignment requires you to:

Critically review each of the seven quality management principles and conduct a review of the available literature for each quality management principle. The report consists of approximately 2000 words.

 

You will need to review the frameworks you have been taught and read about, to describe the key issues facing the organisations managers in able to comment on the appropriateness and effectiveness of the quality management principles, stating how each would benefit the organisation.

 

In order to develop a sound argument and discussion of the proposed topic / issue, you should use relevant academic literature, to support the recommended reading supplied on the LMS.

 

Your terms of reference:

  • What do each of the seven quality management principles mean, provide a description of the principle.
  • What is the rationale which underpins each of the quality management principles? Critically reflect on why the principle is important for an organization.
  • What are the key benefits to an organisation for each of the quality management principles? Give clear examples of benefits associated with each principle.
  • What are the actions you can take? Discuss examples of typical actions to improve the organization’s performance when applying each principle.

It should be written in a report style, not a long essay.

 

Break it down into a logical sequence with a series of headings and sub-headings. It should start with an executive summary, have an introduction and evaluation of the seven quality management principles. It should give the implications for the organisation and the effectiveness of its operations.

 

The assertions that you make as a result of your analysis should be backed up with supporting evidence and a discussion of why they should be implemented, what advantages would they have for the organisation if implemented. Also be specific about what and how they should be implemented. Avoid bland generic statements such as ‘Implement TQM’. This is of no help.

 

This is also an academic report so it should have the relevant academic underpinning. You need to use academic models, and references. There is no absolute number, but NOT counting the lecture notes and recommended textbooks, it should be simple to collect about 10 – 15 good academic journal papers to which you can refer and compare and contrast your results.

 

The report should show three stages of academic/practical analysis: A) Knowledge: demonstrating that the relevant quality management principles exist. B) Understanding: You know what these quality management principles are used for, when, where and how they can be applied. C) You must be able to demonstrate that you can apply them!! This is coupled with the balance between description and analysis. Some of the former is necessary, but it is the latter that is vital. This demonstrates your understanding and particularly your ability to apply the theory and derive useful practical results, understanding and recommendations. It is these analytical aspects which represent the higher levels of learning that can be used a transferable skills valued by both academia and employers.
