Quality Management Systems and Approaches

Course Code: QTY 8212

Individual Assignment

40% of the overall course mark.

Submission of Report: Thursday 6th December 2018.

Submission by 23-30hrs

Via Turnitin on the LMS

“The seven quality management principles”

One of the definitions of a “principle” is that it is a basic belief, theory or rule that has a major influence on the way in which something is done. “Quality management principles” are a set

of fundamental beliefs, norms, rules and values that are accepted as true and can be used as a basis for quality management.

The QMP’s can be used as a foundation to guide an organization’s performance improvement. They were developed and updated by international experts of ISO/TC 176, which is responsible for developing and maintaining ISO’s quality management standards”.

International Organization for Standardization, ISO Central Secretariat, Chemin de Blandonnet 8, Case Postale 401, CH – 121, 4 Vernier, Geneva, Switzerland

This assignment requires you to:

Critically review each of the seven quality management principles and conduct a review of the available literature for each quality management principle. The report consists of approximately 2000 words.

You will need to review the frameworks you have been taught and read about, to describe the key issues facing the organisations managers in able to comment on the appropriateness and effectiveness of the quality management principles, stating how each would benefit the organisation.

In order to develop a sound argument and discussion of the proposed topic / issue, you should use relevant academic literature, to support the recommended reading supplied on the LMS.

Your terms of reference:

  • What do each of the seven quality management principles mean, provide a description of the principle.
  • What is the rationale which underpins each of the quality management principles? Critically reflect on why the principle is important for an organization.
  • What are the key benefits to an organisation for each of the quality management principles? Give clear examples of benefits associated with each principle.
  • What are the actions you can take? Discuss examples of typical actions to improve the organization’s performance when applying each principle.

Key issues:

Because of the diversity of examples that may be chosen for this assignment, and the requirements of the terms of reference, it is not possible, and certainly not desirable, to be too prescriptive about what you should or should not consider in the report.

  • The seven Quality Management Principles are:
    • QMP 1 – Customer focus
    • QMP 2 –Leadership
    • QMP 3 – Engagement of people
    • QMP 4 – Process approach
    • QMP 5 –Improvement
    • QMP 6 – Evidence-based decision making
    • QMP 7 – Relationship management

Assignment Criteria

  • Your final report should be approx. 2000 words, (1500 would probably be inadequate, over 2,500 too long and needlessly verbose. Put the word count on the cover page.
  • The report should be typed and clearly laid out, preferably 12-point font, 1 1/2 line spacing
  •  Spell/grammar checked
  • Submitted on the LMS
  • The key to success is analysis: Why? So what? Specific recommendations, resulting from use of the theory. Not simple description of what you have seen without thinking about it.
  • It is essential that you conduct your analysis making explicit and acknowledged use of the theory.
  • There must be a bibliography and all references must be correctly cited.

Assignment: Useful Hints

This is a practical project! You need to be balanced, give a critique, good and bad aspects, and use the models, this will help ensure you conduct a thorough analysis and derive valuable recommendations.

It is vital that your assignment demonstrates a number of elements. This is a practical business project, and so should show those characteristics.

It should be written in a report style, not a long essay.

Break it down into a logical sequence with a series of headings and sub-headings. It should start with an executive summary, have an introduction and evaluation of the seven quality management principles. It should give the implications for the organisation and the effectiveness of its operations.

The assertions that you make as a result of your analysis should be backed up with supporting evidence and a discussion of why they should be implemented, what advantages would they have for the organisation if implemented. Also be specific about what and how they should be implemented. Avoid bland generic statements such as ‘Implement TQM’. This is of no help.

This is also an academic report so it should have the relevant academic underpinning. You need to use academic models, and references. There is no absolute number, but NOT counting the lecture notes and recommended textbooks, it should be simple to collect about 10 – 15 good academic journal papers to which you can refer and compare and contrast your results.

The report should show three stages of academic/practical analysis: A) Knowledge: demonstrating that the relevant quality management principles exist. B) Understanding: You know what these quality management principles are used for, when, where and how they can be applied. C) You must be able to demonstrate that you can apply them!! This is coupled with the balance between description and analysis. Some of the former is necessary, but it is the latter that is vital. This demonstrates your understanding and particularly your ability to apply the theory and derive useful practical results, understanding and recommendations. It is these analytical aspects which represent the higher levels of learning that can be used a transferable skills valued by both academia and employers.

Assignment Marking Scheme:

With reference to the marking requirements, we are looking for knowledge, understanding and application. Knowledge of the subject, the concepts, models and frameworks. Understanding of their use, interpretation etc. The ability to apply them, ask appropriate questions, get useful answers and from this derive meaningful recommendations for the organisation.

The marking scheme by which your submission will be assessed is:

Overall Presentation and Style of the report: 10%
Clarity of description of the quality management principles 20%
Identification of the rationale which underpins each of the quality management principles 20%
Demonstration of the key benefits to an organisation for each of the quality management principles 25%
Summary conclusions regarding typical actions to improve the organization’s performance when applying each principle 25%

Q1 [15pt]
Suppose you want to estimate the seasonal effect on the revenue. There is a constant term included in the
regression as usual. How many dummies are needed to perform such analysis?
Q2 [20pt]
Use the data in gpa2 and GPA2_description for this exercise.
1. Using all observations and regress colgpa on hsperc and sat.
2. Reestimate the model using only the first 2,070 observations
3. Find the ratio of the standard erros on hsperc from 1. and 2. what do you find? why?
4. Add female, verbmath and their interaction terms into the regression using all observations.
Q3 [20pt]
Load package ggplot2 and type data(diamonds) to load the data set. The definition of table and depth
can be found in the following picture
1. A diamond’s quality can be measured by cut, ordered by Ideal, Premium, Very Good, Good, and Fair.
Create dummy D1 to represent Ideal and Premium, and D2 to represent Very Good and Good.
2. Regress price on carat, depth, table, D1 and D2, all interactions terms between dummies and quantitative
variables (carat, depth and table). Interpret your result
Figure 1:
1
3. Create a random sample of size 1000 from the diamonds data. Draw the scatterplot of carat vs log(price),
color coded by cut.
4. List the distinct categories of color. What is their ordering?
Q4 [45pt] (Just Answer the Question; No R Command)
According to past series of Bond films, the average number of people that are killed by Bond shows substantial
variations among different Bond actors, as shown in the following graph. In particular, Pierce Brosnan ranks
#1 on this list. To study whether the revenue of the film are affected by the number of people that Bond
killed, we performed regression analysis on the available data set. The data are based on 23 past Bond films
with all the 6 Bond actors. For each film, we have information on the adjusted worldwide gross (in 1000
dollars), the average rating (on a 1-10 basis with 10 being the best), rating, film budget, the number of people
Bond killed and others killed in each film, bond actors and the year of the film. To start with, we build up the
following model to see if the number of people that Bond killed in the film would affect the worldwide gross,
Where log(gross) is the logarithm of the worldwide gross, Bond kills is the number of people that Bond
killed in the film, Pierce is a dummy variable indicating whether the Bond actor is Pierce. The following
table shows the estimation results.
Table 1:
Dependent variable:
log(Gross)
‘Bond kills‘ 0.02∗∗
(0.002, 0.04)
Pierce −0.53∗∗
(−1.03, −0.04)

F Statistic 2.73∗
(df = 2; 20)
Note: ∗p<0.1; ∗∗p<0.05; ∗∗∗p<0.01
Answer Q1-Q4 using the regression results above.
1. Does the number of people Bond killed significantly affect the worldwide gross at 5% level? Interpret
the estimated coefficient of Bond kills.
2. Interpret the estimated coefficient of Pierce.
3. Is the regression overall significant at 5% level?
4. What does the adjusted Rˆ2 measure?
2
Suppose you believe that the decade of 1990’s is the booming age for Bond films, so you include a time
dummy variable decade90 into the model.
Table 2:
Dependent variable:
log(Gross)
(1) (2)
‘Bond kills‘ 0.02∗∗ 0.02∗∗
(0.002, 0.04) (0.002, 0.04)
Pierce −0.53∗∗ −0.42

(df = 2; 20) 1.80 (df = 3; 19)
Note: ∗p<0.1; ∗∗p<0.05; ∗∗∗p<0.01
5. From the above results of model 2, why do you think the dummy Pierce becomes insignificant?
3
Now suppose that you run a new model with the interaction term Bond Kills:Pierce, which equals to the
product of dummy Pierce and variable Bond kills.
Table 3:
Dependent variable:
log(Gross)
(1) (2) (3)
‘Bond kills‘ 0.02∗∗ 0.02∗∗ 0.02∗∗

Note: ∗p<0.1; ∗∗p<0.05; ∗∗∗p<0.01
6. Interpret the estimated coefficient of Bond Kills:Pierce. Comparing model 1 and 3, do you think it
is a good idea to include the interaction term? Why
4
Now we turn to study the effect of Bond kills on the average rating, which ranges from 1 to 10. Considering
that each of the actors may appeal to specific group or specific generation of audiences, since each of them
may represent different time and style, we include several dummy variables in the model for each actor.
Moreover, we believe that not only does Bond kills matter, the number of people killed by others (for
instance, the supporting actors) also matters.
7. Interpret the estimated coefficients of Bond kills and Other kills. Comparing the estimated
coefficients for Bond kills and Other kills.
8. Which actor is the base category?
9. According to the estimates (ignoring significance at this moment), who was the best and who was the
worst at boosting the ratings among the 6 Bond actors?
Table 4:
Dependent variable:

Read the article, “Do Lay Christian Counseling Approaches Work? What We Currently Know” by Garzon & Tilley (2009) provided in this module/week. Also incorporate Clinton & Ohlschlager (2002) Chapter 18, Lay Helping, from your text into your answer.

Garzon & Tilley (2009) provide a review of recent research on the effectiveness of a variety of lay counseling approaches. While the authors note that there is some empirical (research) support specific approaches, they also identify a general need for further study on the effectiveness of lay counseling. Based upon your reading of this article and information from Chapter 18 of the course text, please respond to each of the following questions:

  • Why is it important to conduct empirical studies on the effectiveness of lay counseling?
  • How might research on existing lay counseling approaches be used to further develop and improve the care that churches and Christian ministries are providing?
  • How might you be able to partner with your local church, or another Christian counseling organization to produce some basic validation of current lay counseling approaches?
