Course Title/Description:        Aviation Security and Policy Seminar (AERN 45791).  This course examines policies, practices, procedures, and regulatory provisions developed to create and enhance security in civil aviation with a special emphasis on airlines, airports, airspace and governmental agencies responsible for civil aviation security.  As a writing intensive course, AERN is designed to address emerging paradigms in civil aviation security through a scholastic approach that emphasizes descriptive analyses in the study of aviation security policy and practice.  PRE-REQUISITES:  AERN 35340

The research paper will be written throughout the semester.  To ensure proper time and effort are utilized, each student will be required to submit stages (checkpoints) of their work by the indicated times as listed in Section F of this syllabus.  These Checkpoints are designed to help the students complete the Research Paper throughout the semester.

These two airlines are unusual in that they have consistently made a profit even during the hard times of 2008 evidencing a sound and consistent strategy. The two airlines have obvious differences in the way their strategy addressed the market.  The following table lists some of the comparisons we described:

Aware that Tim Clark is nearing retirement, the Board of Directors is selecting some candidates as his potential successor. The person chosen will understudy under Clark until his retirement date. One of the leading candidates, an outsider not currently employed by Emirates Air, has asked you to prepare a report highlighting where you would advise the company to go over the next five years. You will have to define what you see to be the major problems on the horizon, and using the material in the table listed above and any other ideas you might have about characteristics of Emirates Air. You should use those characteristics to define what you think Emirates Air’s strategy is. As you do this you will want to bring into your report the key strategic ideas Magretta has written about concerning Michael Porter’s discussion of sustainable strategic advantage. You will, of course, tie Magretta’s chapters on a tailored value chain, trade-offs, fit and continuity as it applies to Emirates Air.

As you know executives like you to keep it short, to highlight the problem first, and to give your recommendation early in the paper. Task 3:  Individual Report                                                                    (15 marks)

Guidelines

For this task you are required to identify the factors that contribute to the cost of an Airline and describe the different sources of revenue for an airline.

You can answer this by choosing a Full Service carrier of your choice and investigating their latest annual report.  You need to analyze the costs and revenues for the latest financial year for which data is available and comment on the same. For your analysis you can refer to the costs based on the ICAO Airline cost categorization (image attached below for reference) and prepare a pie chart showing the percentage of each cost. You need to do the same for revenues as well, and finally conclude with your findings.

This is an individual assignment, however two students can choose the same airline provided they analyze the costs and revenues for different financial years. The assignment is to be submitted online through the Turnitin Link on Moodle. The link will be open until 17:00 hrs on April 25th, 2016.

Question One

In the case, the Operations Department has already acquired clear complaints on the type of aircraft and type of leak problem. According to the description, it is a hydraulic leak in the aircraft. In addition, consulted inspectors and technicians argue that the source of the leakage is a ‘hidden’ fitting in the aircraft, which is difficult to investigate and resolve. Therefore, determination of the fitting as the primary cause behind the leakage has already been done. The investigator has taken advantage of the expert opinion, experience, and knowledge given by the inspectors and technicians. The remaining function in determination of the root cause is secondary collection of data in order to increase certainty of the initial find.

Question 2

Accessibility of the fitting is a complex and difficult function given its ‘hidden’ attribute. Because of the complexity, the best approach is task analysis, where the investigator interacts with the end users in their specific job settings (Maddox 16). In this, there is elimination of end user data collection errors. Data collected goes to determine important user tasks and niches in operations system design. The analyst must employ a specific set of checklists suitable for the target jobs under investigation in order to extract sufficient information concerning the accessibility problem. The analyst may also request one of the technicians to demonstrate the complexity in tightening the fitting.

Question 3

In determination of what inspectors and technicians need to do in order to tighten the fitting causing the leak, the analyst will follow the same procedure in question 2. First, he or she must perform a task analysis for the inspectors and technicians in their normal work environment. The analyst will incorporate a set of checklists that guides in the job and task evaluation process. Important to note is that the checklist guideline applied is different from that used in question 2, as they are unique to inspectors and technicians only. The analyst will then employ link analysis in order to design the suitable lay out for tightening the fitting. Link analysis gives the locus of each activity reducing the distance inspectors and technicians have to move in order to resolve the leakage problem (Maddox 14).

Question 4

Determination of secondary factors in the leakage scenario is complex given that the faulty component does not reflect all aspects of maintenance. Therefore, one has to perform a walkthrough evaluation that examines the entire system and its products. Inspectors and technicians will have to perform a series of sequential steps in order to identify problems arising from human factors (Maddox 17). An external expert observer is included in order to note areas, steps, and tasks where human factor problems may occur. Walkthroughs are time-consuming processes that require audio-visual recording instruments. However, this method is ineffective in examining faults that are not procedural.
