“You are driving me up a wall!”

My mom used to say that to me a lot when I was a kid. I remember being confused about what she meant. I would get a mental picture of the two of us in a tiny taxi-cab. I was the driver, she was in the back seat, and we were riding vertically up a wall like a spider. It was a weird picture, and I didn’t know what it had to do with my mom being irritated at me (I might have been trying out my new pocket knife on the coffee table or shaving the heads of my sister’s dolls).

Mom was using a figure of speech. Figures of speech are expressions not meant to be taken literally. Literally means precisely as the words indicate; to the letter. In other words, figures of speech mean something, but not exactly what they might seem to mean. Driving someone up a wall, of course, means causing them to be bothered or making them angry.

Kids sometimes have a hard time understanding figures of speech. Have you ever heard a conversation like this among kids?

Ed:       I love pizza!

Ted:     You love it? Do you want to marry it?

Ted may understand what Ed means, which is not literal, but to be funny, he intentionally takes his words literally.

People use figures of speech all the time (in fact, I just used one — I didn’t mean literally “all the time.” I just mean often).

Good descriptive writers are masters of figurative language. Figures of speech allow writers to make comparisons that bring scenes to life in ways literal writing cannot.

There are several common kinds of figures of speech you should learn so you can use them in your writing:

Simile

A simile is a comparison of two things using the words like or as. Similes help your reader make connections to things they are familiar with. Sometimes they reveal an aspect of what you are describing that wouldn’t be apparent otherwise. Similes help communicate subtle impressions and emotions that literal description sometimes can’t.

Examples:

  • The sun rose like a helium balloon into the red morning sky.
  • Shaking his cold, damp hand was like grasping a lake trout.
  • The house was quiet as a cemetery.

 Metaphor

            Metaphors are like similes, except they leave out the words like or as. They also compare things, but by saying one thing is another thing, rather than saying it is like another thing. Simple metaphors normally come in the form A is B.

Examples:

  • Her eyes are radiant sapphires.
  • His bedroom is a museum of things old, decrepit and worthless.
  • After the fight, his fists were throbbing weights dragging at the end of his wrists.

Implied Metaphor

When a metaphor isn’t stated directly (A is B), it’s called an implied metaphor. The comparison is clear, but more subtly stated.

Examples:

  • The rabid sergeant barked his orders. (sergeant = dog)
  • When she removed her hat, her golden hair cascaded over her shoulders. (Her hair = waterfall)

Personification

            Personification is giving human characteristics to non-human things. It’s another way to reveal impressions and create atmosphere.

Examples:

  • The church steeple rose until it tickled the belly of the clouds.
  • The waves slapped the shore and dragged away everything not anchored down.
  • The sun peeked into her bedroom window and summoned the princess from her dreams.

Hyperbole                  

Hyperbole (pronounced  hi-per-bull-lee, not hyper-bowl) is using exaggeration to make a point.

Examples:

  • The song was so lovely that people all over town paused to hear just a note carried by the wind.
  • I laughed so hard I ripped open some internal organs.

Be Original

Be careful not to fall into the habit of repeating dry and dusty old figures of speech that have become cliché. All clichés were creative and original at one time but have lost their zing through overuse. Do the hard work of coming up with your own fresh figures of speech.

Engineers and technicians obviously play a vital role in a technology company such as Verizon, but the firm also needs specialists in everything from accounting to public relations to real estate.

  • Your task: Prepare a draft of a brief presentation that Verizon recruiters could use at job fairs and other venues to entice or persuade both new graduates and experienced professionals to consider joining the company. Choose a structured or free-form design. Create an appropriate number of slides for a presentation that is at least ten minutes but no longer than 15 minutes (not including a question-and-answer period). Assume that the audience members have heard of Verizon but don’t have any in-depth knowledge about the company. As you read Lorraine Hansberry’s play, A Raisin in the Sun, you may have noticed that dramatic plays also encompass the seven key elements of Fiction. Therefore, this assignment requires you to consider not only the elements of Drama, but also the elements of Fiction as you answer the five (5) questions posed below.

Questions:

  1. When authors write literature, naming is a very important feature. For example, in George Martin’s book series Game of Thrones, all children born without legitimacy carry the last name “Snow,” or white, i.e., “blank,” which be a connotative representation of a “blank” space on their imagined birth certificates where a father’s name, or Sir/Ser name should appear, yet does not. The same idea of naming rings true in Hansberry’s play.

Therefore, consider the character, Beneatha’s, name, which can be connotatively understood as “beneath a . . .” something or someone. Now, consider the characteristics of her character, a phrase explained in the Elements of Fiction hand out. Using the text from Hansberry’s play as evidence, list three ways in which Beneatha defies the connotation of her name. In other words, if she is supposed to be “beneath” something, someone, or some ideology, list and explain in 150-200 words EACH demonstrating that she is not.

  1. Describe the stagecraft for Hansberry’s play. Then, explain why said stagecraft is either limited or expanded. While there is no word count for your answer, be sure that your explanation is clear and that you use the text in your explanation.
  2. In 200-250 words, explain the central conflict of Hansberry’s play and Mr. Linder’s participation in that conflict.
  3. Describe the “theme” of Hansberry’s play in 150-200 words.
  4. If Walter Lee Younger, Jr. is the protagonist of Hansberry’s play, which character represents his foil and why? Use the text to explain your answer. While there is no word count for your answer, be sure you convey what you mean thoroughly.

Your Research Report topic is Problem 13.13 on page 496 in your textbook. This is the same topic you chose for your Chapter 11 Work Plan Assignment. (In the next document). You will be selecting a country where English is not the native language to research. You do not have to interview an international student who is native to your chosen country, but you may.  Take a look at Figure 13.6 on page 497– Intercultural Interview Topics and Questions for ideas on search topics about your chosen country.

 

For a written report example to follow, see pages 481-490 in your textbook for “Model Formal Report.” You do not need all of these preface pages such as letter of transmittal, table of contents, executive summary.  Your first page of your report should look like the title page on page 481, and the first numbered page of your report, which would be page 1, will start with your introduction.  (Note, the model report is single spaced, but your report should be double spaced.)

Note:  These guidelines are expected to be followed and will result in five point penalties if not followed in your final written report. 

 

Length – approximately 6 to 10 typewritten pages (this includes your title page and references page)

Formal Business Report: Gathering Data for Expansion Into Another Country (Objs. 4, 5 and 6)

U.S. businesses are expanding into foreign markets with manufacturing plants, sales offices, and branches abroad. Many Americans, however, have little knowledge of or experience with people from other cultures. To prepare for participation in the global marketplace, you are to collect information for a report focused on an Asian, Latin American, European, or African country where English is not regularly spoken. Before selecting the country, though, consult your campus international student program for volunteers who are willing to be interviewed. Your instructor may make advance arrangements with international student volunteers.

Your Task. In teams of three to five, collect information about your target country from electronic databases, the Web, and other sources. Then invite an international student representing your target country to be interviewed by your group. As you conduct primary and secondary research, investigate the topics listed in Figure 13.6. Confirm what you learn in your secondary research by talking with your interviewee. When you complete your research, write a report for the CEO of your company (make up a name and company). Assume that your company plans to expand its operations abroad. Your report should advise the company’s executives of the social customs, family life, attitudes, religions, education, and values of the target country. Remember that your company’s interests are business oriented; do not dwell on tourist information. Write your report individually or in teams.
