PTSD/Veterans/Alcoholism

Description

Is alcohol abuse more prevalent in combat veterans diagnosed with PTSD compared to those combat veterans with no diagnosis of PTSD? I. Introduction/Literature Review: (150 points) What specifically is the research about? Why is the topic important to the field of social work? What is known about the problem? If you are evaluating a treatment approach used with a client or a client group, you should review the literature supporting the efficacy of the treatment approach for that particular problem or, if not available, then discuss literature about the efficacy of the treatment approach with related problems. You should do both if available. If there is no empirical literature, then you might turn to practice theory literature to support the treatment. If your interest is in client satisfaction or a needs assessment, then your literature review should focus on why client satisfaction is important in general and in relation to your agency. Your literature review would also describe how satisfaction is used elsewhere. Finally, your literature review should include issues about measuring client satisfaction. For any proposed study, you should consider the types of methodological approaches used to assess the problem. In summarizing the literature you might wish to identify whether the findings are contradictory and whether these contradictions have been explained. Considerations: • Your literature review need not be long and is likely to be 3 to 5 pages. • You should try to find as up-to-date information as possible. Citations that are over ten years old may no longer reflect the latest information. • Articles must come from peer-review journals. Books are interesting but less relevant. Newspapers and popular press (e.g. Newsweek and the like) are interesting but have not gone through a scientific review. • BE CAREFUL THAT YOU APPROPRIATELY CITE THE ARTICLES AND DO NOT PLAGERAIZE. • Each student will find three articles related to their research questions and write a literature review. Students are required to complete any edits and combine all to produce One Literature Review. • Participants (important characteristics)–Who was in the study? How many participants? Both men and women? Race/Ethnicity? Age group? Married/single/divorced. Inclusionary and Exclusionary characteristics. • Procedure–What type of sample? Convenience sample? Simple random sample? Stratified random sample? • Measures/Materials–What measures will be used? Describe survey and scoring procedure. What was Evidence based? Describe what variables being be measured. Discuss Internal and External validity

Your textbook outlines four types of operant conditioning: positive
reinforcement, negative reinforcement, positive punishment, and
negative punishment. Within your post define and give your own
examples for two of these, one positive and one negative. Then, make
two other posts in which you reply to your fellow classmates with
suggestions of improvements or alternatives to their examples, or cite
authoritative research regarding their examples. As noted in the
syllabus:
Some examples of substantial contributions include elaboration on a
point, constructive criticism, finding relevant examples or
counterexamples from authoritative sources or personal experience,
finding outside research on the topic, or addressing an example in the
context of what is discussed in course materials.

250 words required for this essay. Furthermore, I also need two 150

Critiquing Research Articles

Critiquing Research Articles

Consider the following scenarios: You are interested in buying a new car, but you cannot decide between two models. It is time to vote, and you must decide which candidate you will support. You are reading a research article, but you question the validity of the study. In each of these situations, you must rely on your ability to think critically.

Critical thinking skills are essential in both everyday life and academia. Your ability to comprehend, refine, and accept or reject the work and ideas of others will allow you to expand your own ways of learning. Understanding what to critique, and how to do it, is an important skill as it allows for informed debate.

To prepare:

Identify two research articles related to your chosen profession. For example, if you identified the role of a developmental psychologist, one of your articles might be a study that researched how babies respond to novelty in their environment. Note: Research articles should be no more than five to seven years old.

To Complete this Assignment:

By Day 7, submit a 4 page paper that analyzes two research articles of your choosing. Your analysis should include a description of the purpose and methodology of each study and the authors’ interpretation of the findings. Be sure to address the following issues as they apply to your particular chosen studies:

  • Explain the purpose of the study, including the theoretical frame of reference (if any).
  • Identify variables and hypotheses.
  • Explain the method of the study.
  • Describe the research design used.
  • Describe the sample that was studied.
  • Explain which type of sampling was used. Note the sample size.
  • Provide information on the data collection procedure(s) and operationalization of variables. Note the type of data-gathering instrument.
  • Describe the techniques used for analysis and interpretation of data.
  • Provide a brief summary of the findings of the study and the authors’ interpretation of the findings.

For the critical analysis portion of this paper, do the following:

  • Identify and explain the strengths and limitations of the research design, data analysis used, and the author or authors’ conclusions.
  • Describe any variables that were not included in the study that you think could have been included.
  • Offer any alternative or additional explanations of the findings that the researchers did not consider.

Note: Support the responses within your Assignment with evidence from the assigned Learning Resources. Provide a reference list for resources you used for this Assignment.

Topic 12 Step meeting

Paper details

The writer should write the paper as if he attended the meeting. Please follow the directions precisely. Use Book Gary L. Fisher and Thomas C. Harrison 5th addition for any reference along with any website. Analysis of 12-Step programs and Alternatives Introduction: The purpose of visiting 12-Step meetings is to provide opportunities to hear people tell their stories, and thereby gain insight into the nature of addiction and recovery. The purpose is not to “convert” you to a 12-Step orientation. The instructor’s view is that there are many paths into and out of problematic use of alcohol and other drugs (AOD), and there should be choice available to all people struggling with AOD regarding the best path for them. The instructor also believes that the principles and practices of A.A. are often misunderstood, and social workers need to learn how to understand and interpret A.A.’s strengths in useful ways. Because 12-Step programs are widely-available (especially Alcoholics Anonymous) and provide a mechanism for persons who are not “in recovery” to become familiar with their program (via “open” meetings), the assignment requires attendance at A.A. (4) meetings. The assignment also requires you to visit the websites of several alternatives to 12-Step programs, the most practical and accessible way to become familiar with these resources. Guidelines for Assignment: a) Attend a minimum of four (4) 12-Step meetings. Two must be Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. The other two may be any other 12-Step meeting (including Al-Anon). b) Attend only OPEN meetings (unless you are in recovery). You may prefer SPEAKER meetings, which tend to be larger and less intimate for newcomers and visitors, but DISCUSSION meetings and other types are also acceptable if they are “open”. Meeting schedules provide some guidance on this. If you have experience in 12-step fellowships, choose groups that will provide new learning for you. c) Try to attend alone, to sensitize yourself to the experience that clients have when they are asked to attend A.A., and also so that smaller meetings are not having too many visitors. However, if you feel the need, you may find someone who is experienced with 12 Step groups to company you, and you may certainly advise your colleagues of groups that you found accessible and useful. d) You must respect the anonymity of the people there. Therefore, if you encounter someone you recognize, you must not disclose this to anyone. e) If asked why you are there, explain that you are a professional in training (or a professional currently working in the field), and you want to learn more about 12-step programs. Do not characterize your reason for attendance as “an assignment.” This fails to honor the people you are visiting or your higher purpose to learn from them. f) Explore the major alternative self-help/mutual aid groups primarily via the Internet, as groups are not available locally, and there is typically no established mechanism for visitors in these groups. Topical Outline for paper (Note: Address all five topics, as noted below; total pages = 7/8): 1. Describe the meetings you attended and what you observed & felt in attending (1-2 pages). 2. Discuss A.A.’s view of why addiction occurs and what “recovery” requires. (2 pages) 3. Specifically discuss how you might assist a client to become involved in A.A. (1 page) 4. Discuss two of the following major alternatives to A.A., in terms of their view of addiction and recovery (2 pages): a) Women for Sobriety; b) Secular Organizations for Sobriety; c) Rational Recovery or Self-management and Recovery Training (SMART) 5. Re-write the 12 steps, using language that has meaning for you (and/or might be helpful to a client who is struggling with the traditional AA language). (1 page) NOTE: To support your discussion, you must cite all of the following: Fisher & Harrison (2013), and relevant websites and class materials. Your grade will be substantially-based upon how well you apply these sources to your discussion and analysis.
