Analysis of Impact Draft

This week, you will submit your Analysis of Impact draft (roughly four pages, using APA format).

 

This portion of the Course Project provides an analysis of the chosen technology’s influence on society considering all of the following components:

 

Social

How has this technology been received, accepted, or rejected? Why? Is it feared or favored? What is the attitude toward change? How are the developers trying to sell the technology to the general public? Look at attitudes, feelings (emotions), behaviors, personality, and the ways humans change as a result of this technology. What is being thought, and why? Is the human mind impacted? How? Are interactions between people changing as a result? Who is included or excluded, and why? Use Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, Piaget, or some other theorist. What psychological needs are met by the technology (e.g., cell phones once granted status and now promote a sense of belonging or connectedness) or created by the technology? Consumerism?

Look at groups and organizations that have arisen and prospered because of this technology. Are these groups supportive or antagonistic, and why? (An example is genetically modified foods [GMOs] and the backlash against the Monsanto corporation. Another is cochlear implants that allow the deaf to hear yet reduce the deaf population that calls itself a community.) How does the technology change society, or how does society change in response to the technology? What factors in society led to the development in the first place? What do class, gender roles, race, norms, and the like mean in this context? Who will benefit from the technology, and who might be harmed (this might also belong in the ethics and morals section)? For example, prosthetics enable people to participate more fully and actively in society (some people compete in triathlons and marathons), and war has brought about the need for advances in prosthetic technology as casualties with missing limbs return home to the United States. Look at the workplace, new companies, and/or jobs created, jobs lost (or save this for the economics section, perhaps). Look at roles—subgroups, people’s interpersonal and intrapersonal relationships. Consider crime, healthcare, and schools. Surveillance cameras, for example, have recently been installed in New York City, and the result has been a decrease in the amount of crime, purse-snatching, pickpocketing, and so forth. Yet some fear the big-brother effect of always being watched and tracked, as well as concerns over “who will guard the guards.”

Cultural

This is a really important section. Consider the elements that comprise the culture and subcultures. Compare the United States’ use of the technology with that of other nations around the world. What is it about Americans that brings about innovation, or has America declined in terms of technical innovation, scientific research, and development? Look at advertising for the technology, the use of celebrities or stars or heroes, the applications (e.g., sports and nanotechnology), and the values represented by the culture. What has priority, and why? An example: IBM was spelled out in xenon atoms. Why were these letters chosen instead of something else? What new words have been added to our vocabulary from this technology? Horseless carriage was used long before the term automobile. Wireless preceded Wi-Fi, and webcasting preceded podcasting. Broadcast was a term adapted from agriculture long before it was used for radio and television.

How do musicians and artists react to, use, or incorporate the technology in their artistic productions? For example, fiber optic lighting has been used on the stage and in parades (Disney) for costuming. The drama term in the limelight, for example, was derived from a lens and lighting system used in lighthouses. Look at literature—perhaps science fiction or fantasy stories—that predate the technology (Jules Verne, for example, wrote about submarines before they were actually invented and used—though Leonardo da Vinci had sketched the idea centuries before Verne). Are there any songs, short stories, poems, plays, TV shows, or films that directly make reference to the technology? Are there any related literary works that apply? Is the artifact in a museum or will it be? Why? How does the technology relate to concepts of beauty and novelty and human creativity? How can people express their humanity through this technology? An example: Scientists experimenting with nano made a nano guitar that actually played a tune, though it was subthreshold to human hearing.

Political

Look at government policy, government intervention, government involvement (support or lack of support, funding), both nationally and internationally. Consider Congress, the president, the Supreme Court (decisions), the rate of change, liberalism, conservatism, legislation, litigation, and so forth. What political factors are at work in the progression or regression of the technology (e.g. lobbyists, special interest groups, partisan views, vocal advocates, or spokespersons)? For example: The Americans with Disabilities Act was designed to prevent discrimination and encourage accessibility to public facilities; it impacted architects, companies, organizations, and persons with disabilities through the installation of ramps (wider doors, lower knobs and handles, larger restroom stalls), the use of assistive devices in schools and in the workplace, hiring practices, and lawsuits against employers, among other things.

Economic

Consider production, consumption, costs, variables of supply-demand, corporations, private enterprise, and impact on the nation’s economy (employment, displacement, outsourcing). Are certain industries impacted more than others? Look up financial projections—expectations for growth, startup companies, the stock exchange, and so forth—anything related to business and the United States and global economy. Who are the chief players in the business environment, and what is their role? How much has been invested in research and development? How will the price fluctuate? What economic trends are to be observed? Who will make money from the technology? Who is funding the research and development? Who controls the purse strings, and why? Look at foundations and charitable organizations, the outcomes and the nature of consumers. Be sure to use charts and tables and quantitative data in this section. Tables, figures, and data and statistics must be current, valid, and used appropriately.

And the Environmental Impact

Consider such things as dangers to humans, the depletion of resources, air and water pollution, discovery before inventions, impact on wildlife and humans (health and safety), long-term and short-term effects, waste disposal, and aesthetic considerations (how the technology changes the landscape). Look also at the positive effects (savings of raw materials or fossil fuels, low environmental impact, enhancement to the environment). For example, some thought the Alaskan Pipeline would impact the caribou population and its ability to migrate; the scientists discovered that the population actually increased and was healthier because they had “shade” from the above-the-ground pipe, fewer biting flies, and less physically stressed females.

Other negative examples: The spotted owl and deforestation in Washington State; the snail darter and the dam, endangered species and loss of habitats, extinction, over-mining, overproduction, pollution of ground water, landfills, toxic wastes, stripping the soil of nutrients, over fishing, over hunting, and over harvesting.

          Follow the instructions below to create a small project file to submit to your instructor.

Instructions: 

  • Sign up for the free trial of  Smartsheet. (http://www.smartsheet.com/signup?trp=17) Note that this free trial version is only available for 30 days from sign up.
  • Click the Create New tab. On the left hand side you will see the Template Gallery.
  • Select “Project Management” from the left hand list.
  • Scroll down the template list and search for “Basic Project with Gantt & Dependencies.” and click “Use Template” under template option:.
  • Name your sheet as first name.last name.inf410.w2 (example: jane.doe.inf410.w2) and leave all options checked.
  • Review the following video tutorials. Tutorial #1, Tutorial #2, and Tutorial #5. Note: although the tutorials are for Microsoft Project software, Smartsheet has the same Gantt chart functionality.
  • Once it comes up, you will see the Gantt view. To see the rest of the tabs (duration tab), move the border of the calendar over to the right or click on the Grid View Button under the home tab and that will show the rest of the menu tabs.

Objectives
To know how to determine the throughput of a shared Ethernet network under various loads, using Simulation.
Note: The pictures will not be the same because the software has gone through revisions.
Overview:
In a shared Ethernet network, end systems are typically connected together using a hub. The hub retransmits any incoming frames on all outgoing lines creating a single broadcast domain for all the devices. Within this domain, the Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection (CSMA/CD) MAC protocol is used to determine which node may transmit at any given time and to resolve collisions if two or more nodes transmit at the same time.
Steps:
1. Build the Simulation Model
1. Startup Riverbed Modeler Academic Edition.
2. Select the File tab => New…
3. Choose Project and click on OK.
4. Change the Project Name to Shared_Ethernet.
5. Change the Scenario Name to Low_Load, and click on OK.
6. In the Initial Topology window, select Create Empty Scenario and click on Next.
7. In the Choose Network Scale window, select Office and click on Next.
8. In the Specify Size window, leave the parameters unchanged and click on Next.
9. In the Select Technologies window, scroll down and include the ethernet and links model families, and click on Next.
10. In the Review window, click on OK.
2. First, we will build a LAN in which the workstations are connected together with an Ethernet hub. An easy way to create a network with a large number of nodes in Riverbed is to use the Rapid Configuration tool.
1. Select the Topology tab => Rapid Configuration.
2. Set the Configuration to Star and click on OK.
3. Set the Center Node Model to ethernet16_hub. Set the Periphery Node Model to ethernet_station. Set the Link Model to 10BaseT. Set the Number to 12, and click on OK to create the LAN.
4. Right click on the hub (the device at the center of the star) and choose View Node Description. This device can support up to 16 Ethernet links at 10, 100, or 1000 Mbps. Note that the processing time within the device is considered to be zero, and that the hub retransmits incoming frames on all outgoing lines. Click on the close window icon to close the window.
5. Right click on the hub and select Set Name. Set the Name to Hub. Click on OK to close the window.
6. Right click on one of the Ethernet station and choose View Node Description. This device generates and receives Ethernet frames at configurable rates. Note that collision detection and resolution is handled by the hub. Click on the close window icon to close the window.
7. Now we need to set up the traffic patterns for the Ethernet stations. Right click on any of the stations and choose Select Similar Nodes. Now, right click on one of the stations and choose Edit Attributes. Put a check in the checkbox next to Apply Changes to Selected Objects. Expand the Traffic Generation Parameters and Packet Generation Arguments attributes. Set the ON State Time to constant(1000), and the OFF State Time to constant(0). This will ensure that the stations are always sending. Set the Interarrival Time (seconds) to exponential(0.004) and the Packet Size (bytes) to constant (100). Click on OK to apply the changes and close the window. Each station will now generate traffic at an average rate of one 100 byte packet every 4 milliseconds. You can calculate the average traffic that each node will generate from the interarrival time and the packet size.
For instance: 100 bytes/packet * 8 bits/byte * 1 packet/0.004 sec = 200 Kbps. We are now done building the LAN model
3. Configure the Simulation
1. Select the Simulation tab => Choose Individual Statistics…
2. Expand the Global Statistics item, and the Ethernet item, and select the Delay (sec)
statistic.
3. Expand the Traffic Sink item and select the Traffic Received (bits/sec) statistic.
4. Expand the Traffic Source item and select the Traffic Sent (bits/sec) statistic.
5. Expand the Node Statistics item, and the Ethernet item, and select the Collision Count,
Load (bits/sec), Traffic Forwarded (bits/sec), Traffic Received (bits/sec), and Utilization
statistics. Click on OK to close window.
6. Select Simulation => Configure Discrete Event Simulation…
7. Under the Common tab, modify the Duration to 20, and the unit to second(s). Click on
OK to close the window.

A Bank Headquarters are opening two new branches to help serving over populated costumers in the same city.  The two new branches need to connect them to the Headquarter main database servers and data centers.

Each branch will need to have a direct WAN connection to the headquarters. Furthermore there will be a WAN connection between both branches.  Each branch consist of 3 floors:

  1. Ground floor has 53 connectivity nodes (faceplate) that serve:
    1. 10 customers windows and 3 ATM machines
    2. The finance department 20 connectivity nodes (faceplate)
    3. 20 unused connectivity nodes (faceplate) for expansions in the first floor
  2. First Floor: house the Data center and the Database Center and 80 cable node also each department will have their own IT department.
  3. Second Floor: 80 connectivity nodes (faceplate) and its divided as follow:
    1. 20 connectivity nodes (faceplate) for the Human resources department
    2. 20 connectivity nodes (faceplate) for Management.

Each branch need to access the Bank headquarters Data to Synchronize the Data, this happens every night after working hours. Each branch router is directly linked to headquarters routers with the following IP address:

  1. Branches need to be connected using a Class A addressing scheme using a Serial Connection.
  2. All Datacenters will use a Class B addressing scheme
  3. All users will connect to the network using a Class C addressing scheme.
  4. All departments will be separated by using separate VLANS.

 

You and your team are hired to build the Bank Network system and you are required to do the following:

  1. Draw a schematics of each branches showing the following using MS-VISIO or a similar program:
    1. Each floor connectivity nodes
    2. Equipment room for the backbone of each branch
  2. You need to show all router/switch/device settings in a text file.
  3. Show traffic simulation between floors in each branch using Wireshark.
  4. You need to build the network topology using GNS3 showing the topology for each branch and the connectivity between the branches and head quarters
  5. Using GSN3 simulate the network in each branch and the overall topology
  6. Using GNS3 show the required bandwidth and traffic in linking between the HQ and the two branches and calculate to total all bandwidth
  7. Show the detailed configuration of all the used routers and switches. The network needs to be designed using at least one routing protocol (RIPv2, OSPF or EIGRP).
  8. List the all required hardware: For example, but not limited to: Router, Switches, cabling, connectivity and the implementation, with estimate cost (use excel). Include a detailed price estimate to include installation.

 

Your deliverables should be a professional report, presentation (15-20 minutes) and configuration files submitted individually on blackboard.
