Self-awareness is a very important virtue in any agency or organization. In fact, it enables a person to acknowledge and understand what he or she feels. Personnel in an agency should show self-awareness as they render services to clients. As a result, they can easily recognize their feelings and the impact those feelings have on others. The staff in Allison Smith agency is self-aware since they understand the problems that the agency faces (Burghardt & Tolliver, 2009). The agency operates based on the philosophy of ensuring the clients and staff learns the ethics of self-care. The philosophical techniques comprise of dialogue, contemplation and listening. The staff must portray good conduct at all times especially when serving clients. Regina, for instance, informs Nick that she understands the problems that the agency is undergoing. She is aware that Allison has failed to plan about the future of the agency.

The agency is a non-profit organization thus the need to plan the use of funds in a proper manner. Despite the self-awareness portrayed by the staff, the management considers itself unable to make good decisions. This causes arguments to arise in a meeting that was intended to determine the effective use of the funds (Aarons, 2006).  Ritchie, a client overheard Alfred and Shondelle arguing and decides to knock the door in order to remind them of the rules. He tells them the essence of politeness as an inexpensive virtue. The agency philosophy makes people to realize that caring for oneself is necessary in the entire lifetime. The inability of the staff in the agency to follow self care may cause bad results in most areas of the organization (Burghardt et al., 2009). As a result, misunderstandings will ensue between clients and staff.

The short story “Salt and Pepper in the Pot” demonstrates the level of individualism in terms of staff perceptions towards work. For example, the meeting involves impolite words such as “you people” and “I can handle my department without any assistance.” These statements show the unhealthy relationships between the staff at the workplace.  In fact, most of them feel content in their own capacity and consider the contribution of others as unnecessary. Most of the professionals in the meeting have a perception that their work is strenuous and difficult. Burn out is a contributing factor towards the arguments that arise in the meeting including the comments related to budget cuts (Burghardt et al., 2009).  Allison Smith has failed to exude confidence among the staff members due to her inability to make decisions that will steer the agency in the right direction. This shows the poor relationship she has with the staff thus the frequent conflicts during meetings. Allison did not express her commitment towards the agency. As a result, she publicly declares her inability to make good decisions about the future of the agency thus making staff members develop feelings of uncertainty. Staff members could be arguing over the negative perception they have towards each other rather than the funding of the agency.

The meeting was about applying professionalism to establish how the agency and the departments would continue to function. Regina, the supervisor has odd perceptions towards the team especially Nick. She considers economic status and race as the contributing aspects to conflicts at work. Unhealthy perceptions and separation among colleagues are the cause of Regina’s negative reaction or attitude towards them (Burghardt et al., 2009). Poor perceptions among colleagues affect productivity especially in handling clients since they do not get all the attention they require. The team in the agency is not working towards a greater cause. In fact, the burn out shows the detrimental effect of the professionals towards the care that should be offered to the clientele. The inability to work collaboratively and offer proper treatment to clients is, therefore, associated with a lack of self-awareness and perception (Garman, Davis‐Lenane & Corrigan, 2003).

Personal values dictate the behavior and perception of someone towards others. According to the readings, personal values resonate with the manner in which the operations at the agency are undertaken. Personal value is the ability to handle client’s requirements to their satisfaction while considering the views of others as necessary (Burghardt et al., 2009). The agency can be successful when the staff works collaboratively through idea-sharing in an effort to achieve the objectives.  The staff is always arguing about concerns that should be treated with the prudence it requires. The funding of the agency depends on proper decision making that will ensure its success in the future. The lack of perception and good attitudes among staff members is affecting the personal values of the agency. In fact, they are derailing the progress of the agency since everyone wants to be independent-minded.

Regina, for instance, considers collaboration difficult since the team members want to work on their own. Nick is already accusing Allison for the poor management of funds instead of helping to find a lasting solution to the woes in the agency. The clients are also involved in the wrangles as they are caught between the resolution of the management and that of the staff. The staff of the agency holds negative values such as impoliteness, insults and false accusations since they do not believe in each other’s work. Rather than working towards a common goal, they keep arguing in meetings as everyone strives to pursue individualism (Manning, 2003). These values have a negative impact on the quality of human services work. Clients believe that the staff should act as their role model by behaving morally and addressing their concerns with integrity. However, this is not the case since they keep arguing and faulting each other over funds that should care for the wellbeing of the clients.

The staff believes in the spirit of individualism in attending to clients. The conflicts in the meetings they attend are attributed to the lack of harmony among the staff members. They do not engage each other in agency activities and have instead chosen to criticize their colleagues in one way or another.  The staff believes that working at an individual level yields more results and prevents contradiction. Decision making is done on individual grounds rather than a group. The perceptions they have towards each other is not conducive for the agency (Burghardt et al., 2009). The agency should be attuned to the spirit of service to clients without arguments with regards to funding and other agency concerns. Although the staff comprises of different personality traits and attitudes, it is necessary that collaborative effort is acknowledged for the success of the agency. The lack of open-mindedness is also evident in the agency since Allison fails to involve the staff on matters of funding. The chaos in meetings is attributed to the inability to account for funds and the need for adequate planning for the future of the agency. The arguments among the staff demonstrate the belief that issues cannot be resolved in a polite manner without quarrelling.  The management under the leadership of Allison Smith is unable to make good decisions about the future of the agency. The belief in this case, is the lack of necessary mechanics to help with the budgeting for future of the agency.

The agency should improve on the individualistic aspect at the workplace so that the staff can work collaboratively towards a common goal. Regina will not be able to supervise the team unless there is collaboration or collective effort among the teammates. Allison should also engage the staff in the decisions regarding the funding of the agency. The involvement will reduce the conflicts and arguments during meetings. As a result, everyone will be working towards a consensus that seeks to create a better working environment for the staff (Mary, 2005). It is necessary for preparedness to prevail in the agency for the purpose of ensuring there is awareness about what goes on. Besides, the staff should realize that without the ethical guidelines that relate to dealing with clients, the agency will not operate as expected. Client interest should be safeguarded since they showcase the essence of the agency’s existence. The staff should acknowledge that clients are looking up to them as role models. As a result, they should portray themselves as worthy at all times. The clients need to be encouraged that the staff comprises of a strong team that can easily handle their grievances to satisfaction.

Over the course of the semester, you will do research (i.e. collect data) on a firm of your choice.  You will analyze the internal, external, and strategic factors of your chosen firm and write a 15 – 20 page paper discussing your findings. Format and content requirements are below.

 

A Note on Firm Selection: Many students do not take firm selection seriously and then struggle throughout the semester because their firm is too big, too small, data is not available, etc. In the past, most individuals that ended up with a low project grade attributed it to poor firm selection. Take firm selection seriously. Some tips on firm selection include:

  • Make sure the firm is publicly traded.
  • Make sure the firm is a member of a well-defined industry
    • g. General Electric is difficult to categorize into a single industry, so it would be challenging to identify GE’s competitors.
  • New firms and non-diversified firms are poor choices
  • Make sure that you understand the products of the firm.

 

I suggest that you skim chapters 8 – 11 of your textbook to get a sense of the strategic issues that are relevant for selecting an appropriate firm for this project. The issues boil down to: vertical and horizontal integration, outsourcing, diversification, mergers and acquisitions, corporate venturing, international expansion, alliances/joint ventures and corporate governance. Before you select a firm, make sure that it has encountered at least one of these strategic issues in the past, and should grapple with at least one of them in the future. You may not choose any firm that is the subject of one of the course cases.  Also, if you have trouble choosing a company, I have a list of companies that are appropriate for this assignment.

Introduction to your firm:

  • Should describe the firm size (in sales, assets, or employees), age, market share in US, and CEO. These statistics should be from 2015 or 2016.
  • Briefly discuss and summarize financials. Compare 5 year stock chart to S&P 500
  • Briefly touch on history of firm
  • Describe the mission and vision statements (use quotes and cite appropriately if quoting these statements. Also, a description should follow if quoting)
  • Describe the firm’s global position (how many countries does it operate in? in which country does it have a large presence? Etc…)

External Analysis:

  • Briefly identify and define the industry.
    • Which firms are in it? What do they do?  What are their market shares, profit figures, size, etc.? How have these figures been changing over the past decade? Be sure to provide demand statistics and industry structure. Provide a sense of the industrial setting.
  • Discuss at least two of Porter’s 5 forces. State whether the force is weak or strong, and how it is influencing industry profitability. Provide support for your arguments.
  • Discuss at least one macroenvironmental trend that is effecting industry profitability.
  • Describe your company’s opportunities and threats. USE SEPARATE SECTIONS (one for opportunities, and one for threats).
    • Remember, this is the industry analysis. I should be able to read this section without knowing which firm you are covering.

 

Internal Analysis:

  • Identify your firm’s resources, capabilities, and distinctive competencies.
  • Discuss one of the competitive advantage building blocks that your firm concentrates on, and how that fits into the firm’s value chain.
  • Describe your company’s strengths and weaknesses. USE SEPARATE SECTIONS (one for strengths, and one for weaknesses). Do not be one sided in your report! Weaknesses may not be obvious, so do some serious research.

 

Strategic Action and Corporate Level Strategy:

  • Discuss the firm’s portfolio of businesses and illustrate how the firm creates (or attempts to create) value with its corporate-level strategy.
  • Then, provide an in-depth discussion of one or two recent corporate-level strategic actions. Peruse Chapters 9-10 and focus on one or two of the strategies covered therein. Do NOT attempt to address all the topics covered in the course or all the strategic actions the firm has taken. What I am looking for is not breadth but rather depth. Provide a list of the things that the company has done, and then pick something that is typical of the methods this firm uses for expanding its portfolio of businesses. For example, you may discuss an acquisition, a joint venture, an international expansion, or restructuring.
    • Discuss the pros and cons of these actions – did they create value? Why or why not?  Provide suggestions on how these actions could have been better handled.  Conclude with your educated assessment of the appropriateness of the firm’s current corporate-level strategy.  Remember to use facts (i.e. data) in support of your arguments throughout.

 

 

Recommendations to the CEO:

  • Look to the future and offer your assessment of where the firm should go from here. In the first section, you identified the key success factors in this industry, and in the next two sections, you analyzed the firm’s current strategic positions – now extrapolate (based on appropriate facts & concepts) and suggest what future strategic actions the firm should take so that it is positioned to possess and maintain these key success factors.
  • Your recommendations should “follow” from the preceding analysis such that it should help the firm exploit the opportunities or eliminate the threats that you have identified. Your recommendations should also be in line with the firm’s strengths and weaknesses such that they should leverage the firm’s strengths or compensate for the weaknesses that you have identified previously.
    • Stay away from basic marketing suggestions, such as “Improve your reputation” or “Advertise more” or “Offer better customer service”, etc. Also, avoid discussions of minor tactical moves.  Instead, suggest strategic actions such as specific countries to expand into, specific firms to acquire, etc.  For example, if a firm repackages a product, changes prices, adds a new feature, etc., these are generally not major strategic actions.  Instead, these are considered tactical actions – smaller actions that adjust a current strategy.  While these types of adjustments are important, they’re simply not what we’re focusing on in this class.  We’re focusing on strategic moves – moves that are much larger and significant in scope.  For example, if a fast food company like Burger King sees a trend toward low-carb eating, that company may add a new item to its menu.  That’s a tactical move. What you want to focus on in your report is something more along the lines of Burger King buying the Atkins company, or forming an alliance with Atkins, or expanding into other countries without a low-carb trend.  You do NOT want to simply recommend that Burger King increase its advertising or start a new campaign to emphasize its low-carb options; sure, that’s part of it, but not our focus here.
  • Whatever your recommendations, summarize the reasoning behind each recommendation, and then explain what the effects of implementing this recommendation are likely to be. What are the risks involved with implementing your recommendations? What are some issues that may make it difficult to implement? Bolster your arguments with strategy concepts and empirical facts—this is where most students struggle.

Basic Assignment:  Write a 4 page paper (typed, double-spaced) in which you describe and defend your views about whether or not managers of business firms have any ethical obligations beyond making as much money as possible for their company (within the limits of the law).  If not, why not?  If so, why?  And how would you characterize the nature and extent of those obligations?

 

Some comments:

 

  1. This is a big question and a controversial one.  I don’t expect you to have a definitive and perfect answer.  I do expect you to try to put your thoughts into a reasonably coherent form, and to show that you have understood and taken account of the ideas we have been studying about this general issue.

 

  1. You may not have thought about this issue in quite these terms before, but you probably do have opinions about it.  That is, in your experience of business (as employee, customer, supervisor, seller, etc.)  you have almost certainly developed some ideas about how you think people ought to act, what sorts of conduct are fair or unfair, appropriate or inappropriate, etc.  Try to put those opinions together with the more theoretical ideas about business ethics that we have encountered so far in this course.

 

  1. One relatively simple way to approach this topic is to see your task as choosing between the different answers we have encountered in our reading (and then defending your choice):
  2. Milton Friedman’s ‘free market purist’ view, which says that the only responsibility of businesses is to make profits for stockholders (within the limits set by a rather minimal set of rules against force and fraud);
  3. R. Edward Freeman’s ‘stakeholder’ view, which says that managers must balance the interests of all the stakeholders who are affected by business activity.
  4. Joseph Heath’s ‘market failures’ view, which says that managers have a ‘fiduciary duty’ to run the business for the benefit of the stockholders, but should also see themselves as having fairly extensive duties to ‘play fair’ with other people affected by their decisions (and not to take advantage of the opportunities created by market failures).

 

A more ambitious approach would be to articulate and defend some new way of thinking about this issue.

 

  1. Remember that your job is not to focus on what the law requires or on what might be useful or expedient, but to explain what you think is right.  The question is not  “What image should a company project in order maintain the good will of the public?”  Nor is it “What rules should we follow in order to avoid costly lawsuits?”  The question is “Do we have any responsibilities that we ought to fulfill (to employees, to customers, to the public, etc.), even if it costs us something to do so?”  (A possible answer to this question is “No.  We are entitled to do anything that the law and the market will let us get away with.”!  This is the ‘free market purist’s answer, and it has a distinguished lineage.)

 

  1. You may find it helpful to focus your remarks around a particular case (real or imaginary) where there is a question about whether or not it is appropriate for managers to consider the interests of some group of people, even though there is money to be made by disregarding those interests.  But don’t allow yourself to lose sight of the general topic.  If you discuss a specific case or issue, use that discussion to illustrate a general point about the ethical responsibilities of business managers.
  2. When you are thinking about how to allocate your time, keep in mind that each of these position papers counts for 20% of your final grade, as much as all the response papers put together.  If you need to choose between putting more time into the position paper or more time into the weekly response papers that are due between now and the due date for the position paper, it would be wise to put your efforts into the position paper.
