Assume a Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) multiplexer combines four sources, A, B, C and D, using a synchronization time slot of 2 bytes with one extra framing bit for synchronization;

1) Draw a picture to describe the synchronized TDM.

2) Explain how time is shared and how the synchronized transmission is implemented 3) Each analog signal is digitized using 8-bit Pulse Code Modulation (PCM). The PAM is shown in Figure 1 below. Give the PCM output of Frame 2, Frame 3 and Frame 4.

4) As shown in Figure 1 below, source C stops transmitting at the third frame, and source D stops transmitting at the fourth frame. Discuss the resource utilization of the multiplexed channels in these cases.

5) Discuss the advantages and the disadvantages of synchronized transmission.

6) Suppose that 10,000 people are talking one-to-one (i.e., 5,000 calls) on the phone at a specific time. What is the total bit rate generated by all these people if each voice call is encoded using PCM, which requires 64kbps for each voice channel?

7) A digital transmission system has a bit rate of 50 Mbps. How many PCM voice calls can be carried by the system?

8) Bonus 5 marks: Investigate how to transmit the student numbers of your team members  more efficient than the synchronized TDM transmission.

SCENARIO

As a LTU student you are given a placement at a secondary school. Recent reports in the media have raised awareness of a study conducted by researchers at LTU on the sexual health of secondary students. Two issues raised in the report have received particular attention about behaviours among secondary school students: alcohol and drug use; and the use of technology and cyberbullying.

The media attention has led to an increase in the number of parents at the school raising concerns about these issues. In response, the school principal has approached the LTU placement students, who are studying Public Health, Rehab Counselling or Health Information Management, and asked them to prepare a response to the report that includes additional analysis of relevant data. This is needed so that teachers in the school are better informed about the research and can answer parents’ questions. The principal makes it clear that the expectation is for “evidence-based reports” as some of the parents “know a lot about this sort of thing and we need to be clear that we know what we are talking about”.

The school has also collected data from two sources:

  • A random sample of students in Years 10, 11 and 12
  • A focus group with Year 12 students.

Public Health, Rehab Counselling placement students were asked to prepare a report based on the NSASSH report and the focus group data to address the following three research questions.

  • How do drinking patterns, in terms of the number of drinks on a day that a student has an alcoholic drink vary for all students in Years 10, 11 and 12 and for male and female students in Years 10, 11 and 12?
  • Are any observed differences in drinking patterns for these groups statistically significant?
  • Considering the qualitative data available, what are possible explanations for drinking behaviours in Year 12 students?

Title page and abstract (10%)

This section should include:

  • Title for the report, author’s name and affiliation (that is, Department of Public Health, La Trobe University).

This section should be comprised of two parts.

  • The first part should include the results of your quantitative analyses. (Note: data sources will be specific to your discipline [see attached]). There are two main aspects to this: a description of the data from your data source (Table 7.2 (NSASSH) or the HIM dataset) in both narrative and graphical formats; and the results of your quantitative analyses. The results of your analyses should be reported as a narrative summary and in terms of descriptive statistics and inferential statistics (in the form of chi-square, χ2, and/or t‐tests), which can be presented in a table format.
  • The second part of your results should describe the focus group sample and the themes that are identified in your analysis, using examples from the transcript to support each theme. At least three themes should be identified in your analysis.
  • Discussion (20%)

This section should discuss the results in reference to the research question or hypothesis and objectives. It should include an interpretation of the study results and their implications. This section should also include acknowledgement of the study limitations (including what they are) and suggestions for future directions or next steps.

 

Appendices (10%)

This section should include your coded transcript (that is, the coding and themes that you develop in your qualitative data analysis)

All project papers should be divided into appropriate sections. The onus is on the students to provide a well-organized and well-written work. The following ordered list of project paper contents is supposed to serve as a guide.

  1. Introduction

This is one of the most important components of the report. It should begin with a clear statement of what the project is about so that the nature and scope of the project can be understood by a lay reader. It should summarise everything you set out to achieve, provide a clear summary of the project’s background, relevance and main contributions. The introduction should set the context for the project and should provide the reader with a summary of the key things to look out for in the remainder of the report.

  1. Literature Review

It means some theoretical justifications for the project. This should include a literature references to support the process, validity, and value of your project. For example, if you are doing a project to introduce social entrepreneurship in the public, then this section would provide a literature review describing what is social entrepreneurship, what are different theories of it which have been described by other researchers in different articles or books and why social entrepreneurship is valuable to economic development and/or business creation in a country. Whatever you include it should have proper reference from the literature.

After the literature review you may also add company background; in which you are conducting the research. It can be any manufacturing or service company operating in UAE. It may include its business details like product and service information.

  1. Methodology

It means the procedures. This section should include a description of the major activities and activity timetable for data collection to complete the project. For example, either you will choose interview method for data collection or you will go for questionnaire survey. Following the social entrepreneurship example, this section would indicate the major activities such as number of contact employees in the selected company, sources of secondary data, approaches for the analysis of the collected data, etc.

  1. Findings/Evaluation

This section should include the specific measurable outcomes. In other words, specify that what you have found out in this research. Provide all your results here in this section in more visible and tangible way. You may make graphs or tables to demonstrate your result findings. Along with your results you can also add your reflection (ideas) on these results with analytical approach.

  1. Conclusion

In this section you have to wind up your research by briefly discussing the main objectives of the research and how you have met these objectives. But same time you have to write practical implications for the mangers. It means that you should suggest some new ideas to the manger to improve their relevant area in which you were conducting your research.

The language of the project paper is English. Use short curt sentences. Be very careful to avoid spelling and grammatical errors.

 

  1. Font size and type

 

Candidates must use Times New Roman font. No other fonts are acceptable.

 

Font Size:

  • For text use 12-point font.
  • For tables and figures, use 10-point.
  • For footnotes, 10-point.
  • For title page 14-point

 

Please type in bold for headings and subheadings. Headings should be typed in all upper case letters while sub-headings are to be typed in upper and lower case letters.

 

  1. Font style

 

Only one font style (Times New Roman) may be used through the entire project report, including the title page, approval page, acknowledgment, table of contents, main body, bibliography and appendices.

 

  1. Headings

 

Chapter headings are to be centered and written in bold, upper case letters. The font size for chapter headings is 16 point. Other sub-headings are to be aligned to the left margin and should be 14 point in font-size. Sub-headings should be in upper and lower-case. Underlining and boldface in the sub-headings is at the student’s discretion.

 

 

  1. Paragraphs

 

Spacing between two paragraphs in the basic text should be set at 4.0 spaces. The first sentence of a paragraph should be indented to 6 spaces. A heading that appears as a last line on a page will not be accepted. There should be a minimum of two lines of a paragraph at the bottom of the page under the heading.
